Set in 1896, "Tjoet Nja' Dhien" celebrates one of Indonesia's great heroes who fought for independence from the Dutch. The pious Muslim people of Aceh, a city that had flourished since ancient times as a trade port, enter into a fierce war with the Dutch. Tjoet Nja' Dhien, the widow of a rebel leader operating in Aceh in Sumatra, assumes the leadership when her husband Teuku Uma is killed in an ambush. Dhien's charismatic presence and power of survival motivate the locals to join and later continue their opposition to the Dutch. Despite personal obstacles, she remained in the thick of the struggle for ten years.

Although Ayu has been honest, Sutra is continuously haunted by the fact that Ayu was not a virgin when they married, even after five years of marriage. As a result, Sutra always faces problems in having sex with his wife. Then when he finds out that Ayu met her old friend, Manaseh, Sutra becomes increasingly suspicious and his mental state grows unstable. He himself has a relationship with Rhoda Darsono, who has a very possessive nature. This disturbs Sutra, who only wants to have fun with her. Just when Sutra starts to realise his mistake, he is murdered.

In this sequel, the preceding romance between Rhoma and Kartika, is explored. Although Rhoma is imprisoned, Benny Compo is not satisfied with the situation, while the Rhoma’s band is in shambles. Benny’s group controls the stage with uproarious music. After his release, the conflict extends to a confrontation between two musical genres. Both bands decide to have a duel on one stage. Rhoma takes six songs, while Ikang Fawzi sings two songs.

Aline becomes pregnant by Andre in Paris, where she learns fashion. Their relationship is broken when Andre asks Aline to have an abortion. Aline returns to Indonesia with Prasetyo, a dance choreographer and together, they raise Aline’s child. Years later, Andre returns to Indonesia and causes Aline to be confused between returning to Paris or to remain in Indonesia.

After her father Suhada is imprisoned for a killing in self-defence, Sari and her mother drift into prostitution. When Suhada is out of prison and sees the sad lives of his wife and daughter, he is infuriated. He stabs Deny, the young man who is attracted to Sari, so that lands him again with the police. Deny’s father is against his son having a relationship with Sari. But Deny is the first one who slept with Sari so they continue their relationship for the sake of love.

A portrait of newly married couple, Nurlela and Hasan, who have to live at the house of Nurlelas’s father. They do not have enough money to find a place of their own. Nurlela's father constantly compares Hasan negatively to his rich son-in-law Bakri (August Melasz), causes a friction between the young couple. Hasan and Nurlela fights when looking for their own way to be able to live independently. This situation makes them lie to each other, especially Hasan, who questions himself about his work and its environment. Hasan’s hard work to get off the family’s house eventually causes a misunderstanding. Nurlela almost commits suicide before the couple is able to trust each other again.

Beginning with a flashback, Richard goes for a vacation at the hometown of his friend, Roni. There, he dates Roni’s sister, Katyana, and makes her pregnant. But Katyana chooses another young man who lives in the town, as she sees Richard falling for Nina, who has always been jealous of her. Richard leaves, leaving a necklace and swearing a furious oath that he will destroy all women. The flashback ends and we see Rizal, who is left by his mother, Katyana. Rizal is Richard’s son. He becomes a vagabond and is found in a weak condition by Roni and his daughter, Riana. He is taken care of until he is grown up. Then Roni is disabled after an accident and his wife, Nina, becomes a prostitute and joins a crime syndicate. When Rizal and Riana start to have an intimate relationship, Nina throws Rizal out of the house, and then he starts a job as a police informant.
