History

Born in Padang Panjang, died in Jakarta. Between 1940-1942, Sjamsuddin worked as a photographer at the Sinar Jakarta cliché factory, then became a photographer at Balai Pustaka until early 1947. After leaving Balai Pustaka, he worked briefly at the Mayfair Photo Studio, then became a freelance photographer. In late 1949, he returned to Balai Pustaka until April 1951 when he began as a cameraman at PFN. It was between 1952-1956 at PFN that he had the opportunity to study in the Netherlands. Towards the end of 1956, Sjam left PFN to work at Persari and immediately worked on "Anakku Sayang" (1957) which won the trophy for best photography in the 1960 FFI. After Persari was closed during the film industry crisis, Sjam played with "Becha Lover", Sampan Boy "(1959) the production of Murni Film with Italian Television, then" Ratu Ratu Rumah Tangga" (1960), "Pagar Kawat Berduri" (1961). In the meantime, he also made several documentaries for PT Shell Indonesia. In 1961, Sjamsuddin began working at the newly opened Penas Studio. While in Penas, he had time to show the film "Tauhid" (1964), a joint production of Perfini-Ifdil - Persari, which took him to Mecca. Sjamsuddin left Penas in 1965 and became a freelance cameraman. In Film Appreciation Week 1967 Nasional received the award for the best cameraman for his works "Petir Sepandjang Malam" and "Menjimbing Djedjak. Bloody "(both 1967). This achievement was repeated in FFI 1977 through "Ateng Sok Tahu"(1976). Sjam, who until the end of his life had made about 50 films, died during the making of "Ateng Sok Aksi" (1977).

Ateng is spoiled by his grandmother and this troubles his parents since Ateng is a little mentally challenged and needs special education from a teacher. The presence of Iskak, a village kid who is adopted and brought there to accompany Ateng is also a worry as Iskak always has ideas for his own profit. Ateng becomes very dependent on Iskak, so when Iskak is told to leave after he is accused of stealing a neighbor’s watch (though unproven), Ateng is very upset. Then he climbs up a water tower and refuses to come down until Iskak returns.

Don Ateng Singaleon throws a party and the beautiful Dona Vivi attends and immediately gains Iskak Kreolibo’s attention. But the party is disrupted by the arrival of the Kribo tribe who want to seek revenge for an incident at the lake. One day, Papai the sailor appears and he gets along well with Dona Vivi until Iskak becomes jealous. Later, Iskak uses the Kribo tribe to help him get his way. The story itself can be considered superfluous as they merely set up the jokes for the scenes.

Ateng and Iskak try their fortune in Jakarta by working as helpers for Bagio, who makes fun of them all the time. Then, they meet Vivi and Erni whose car breaks down and they help to pull the car to their house. After getting a job from the girls, Iskak starts to dream about Erni. Iskak tells Ateng about his dream and the father overhears this. So they are both fired. But the house servant, Ardi, gives them an address of his relative, Diran, who owns a garage. They get the job and on one delivery, they meet Vivi and Erni, who brings them back to work at home, at the request of their father. There are funny musical scenes in the film, one of which features three songs in a row.

A little boy is told the tale about the development of Jakarta, when a village was divided into two, and causing the people to oppose each other. On one side, there is Anton while the other side is lead by Mahmud. Maulana, the village boy whom Anton has adopted, falls in love with Laila, the sister of Mahmud. This love affair irritates Majid, Mahmud’s right-hand man, because he has loves Laila, long before her meeting with Maulana. Maulana and Laila refuse to take sides between the two opposing sides, and try to reconcile them. But a battle is inevitable. In the end, Mahmud kills Anton; but Mahmud dies at the hand of Maulana, his future brother-in-law. Then Maulana runs to Laila’s house and confesses. Laila forgives him, but Majid cannot. He orders a boy to steal the gun of Sabeni, an informant, and he shoots Maulana with it. While the intention was to make this film a musical, it didn’t work as the “realistic world” and the “musical world” could not blend fully.

Romi and Juli, junior high school friends, are in love with each other. But their parents; Sabar and Komar, are business rivals, and creates obstacles for them. Romi and Juli agree to run away from home and they get lost in a cave. Romi falls ill so Juli has to urgently find medicine. Meanwhile, their parents keep looking for them and finally make peace with each other after their children are found.

Linda gives birth to an illegitimate child from a relationship with her boyfriend, Alex, who dies in an accident. To avoid a scandal, her father asks his younger sibling to take the baby to Cirebon. Linda is then told that the baby is dead. The baby, Yatim, is treated badly by the caregiver. The caregiver steals the money sent by Linda’s father to support the baby, so Linda’s father gets angry when more money is demanded. Linda overhears the conversation and is told the truth. So Linda goes to Cirebon to pick up her child but Yatim has already run away to Jakarta to look for her. He is aimless and homeless, and becomes a shoe polisher. A children’s toy seller hears a radio broadcast looking for the missing child and advises Yatim to go meet his parent. Yatim refuses, and instead gets hit by a car. Finally, they are reunited at the hospital.

Amidst the election rivalry of two villages for the village head post, Cigugur and Cijulang, a troupe of Ronggeng artists, with its prima donna, Sari, arrives at the sub-district center for their regular performance. Sari and Dadang, the son of the Village Elder of Cijulang, are in love with each other. Dadang is also running as a candidate in the village head elections. But Ohim, the son of the Cigugur Village Elder, is also madly in love with Sari. He gets even more daring after a humiliating incident when he tries to touch Sari’s hair bun on the ronggeng stage. The touching of the hair bun is one of the rituals in the traditional art of Ronggeng. Dadang’s father is angered by his son’s relationship with Sari, since it could jeopardize his candidacy as the head of the village.

On the trail to catch the killer of his brother, Achmad easily defeats a bandit who challenges him. This impresses Citra, a child, who since then follows Achmad wherever he goes. When they come to a village threatened by robbers, Achmad stops and tries to solve the problem. One of the tough guys of the village, Wirya, notices Achmad and is impressed by him and Achmad’s religious devotion. He becomes friends with Achmad and asks him to agree to his condition not to bother Aisah, a village girl, who is actually in love with Achmad. Then the robbers launch a major attack, which Achmad repels. From the defeated chief, Achmad finds out that Wirya is the killer of his brother. Wirya admits killing Achmad’s brother, for committing crime and adultery.
