History

High school education (did not graduate, 1954). From school, straight to film as a cameraman assistant at the Olympic Studio. After serving as assistant cameraman for only two films—one of which was Disimpang Djalan (1955) directed by The Teng Gan (TG The)—he was appointed as a full-time cameraman in the film A Thousand Steps (1957) Starting his career in the film industry in 1955 with the film . In 1957 he acted as a cameraman in the film Turang, produced by Rentjong Film Corp., this film won awards for Film, director, supporting actor, and artistic arrangement at FFI 1960. Since then his career as a cameraman has continued.

Nick and Arini finally marry despite their big age difference that leads to conflicts. Nick and Arini try to cope, and even decide to see a psychiatrist. Meanwhile, Ella, Arini’s child from Helmy, has a problem after a kidney transplant. She needs a new kidney. Her stepmother, Ira, offers to be the donor, with financial help from Arini. The operation is done in Germany. Upon returning home, Arini finds an upset Nick, who is jealous about a picture of Arini and Helmy together. In fact, Nick’s mother, who has always disapproved of his marriage, funded Helmy’s trip to Germany to set up the situation. Nick suspects that Arini is pregnant and refuses to go home. In frustration, he brings home a prostitute to his mother’s house. Then his mother goes to Arini’s house and finds out that Arini is struggling to give birth. She is then taken to the hospital and has a Caesarean. Meanwhile, Nick finds out the truth of the whole incident and goes to the hospital to apologise. The marriage survives.

Nurhayati’s husband dies in an accident and she is left with four small children. Nur herself knows that she will not live long, as her doctor reveals that she must undergo a heart and lung transplant, with a little chance of survival. After telling the real situation to her father and to her eldest child, Asih, the children are brought to the families she considers as able to raise them. How lucky she is that the three families are eager to accept her children. On a birthday party of her youngest child, she feels at ease and dies.

Pras has almost finished college, has rich parents and a beautiful, faithful fiancee but is suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer. He only has six months left to live. Pras’ parents ask Tika’s parents to allow them to marry. Tika, who is very much in love with Pras, agrees although her parents oppose. Pras takes Tika to live in the fishermen’s village. He wants to contribute to the village. Tika hides her pregnancy although Pras is aware and pretends not to know. Death finally comes but Tika is relieved as Pras has enjoyed his life.

There is more tension when Rachmat, who is matched to Yati’s daughter, Neneng, is more attracted to Mira. By chance, Mira repeatedly catches Yati having affairs. Her father is furious. Then Yati runs away with the fortune and the child of her affair. Neneng, who stays, commits suicide. Her father realises his mistake and reconciles with Sumiati. Rachmat has also come back for Mira.

After her husband passes away, Dameria is forced to give up her daughter, Sari, to be adopted by her aunt, the spinster/lawyer, Purwanti. Dameria remarries to Zainal and lives a good life. Later, she yearns for Sari who is now a grown up. Sari knows about her intention. Dameria visits her at school, takes her for walks and lunches. Ten years later, when Purwanti is overseas for business, Sari leaves for Medan to meet her biological mother. When she returns, Purwanti goes straight to Medan. A confrontation ensues but Purwanti lets Sari decide. The girl eventually chooses to stay with her biological mother. But as time goes by, Sari feels uncomfortable with the new atmosphere and finally returns to her aunt’s home.

Non has been depressed for some time, as she is not accepted by the family of her husband, Hans Tobing, though they already have three children. Just when Non is finally being accepted in her husband’s family, her happiness is threatened by ovarian cancer. It traumatises the family. Hans has to sacrifice everything that he can to save his wife’s life. Fortunately, Non gets her spirit back when she realises that her children still need her. That spirit is the most important element in the process of her recovery.

Agnes appears to be out of control. Her father is seldom at home while her stepmother is afraid of her. At school, she dares to confront teachers whom she considers as no good. A young teacher, Wing Ganda, tries to understand her and shows her how to use her talent. His effort is fruitful but Agnes falls in love with him. Wing tries to avoid her. When another young man attempts to approach Agnes, she makes a fool out of him. Agnes has to deal with the fact that she cannot conquer everything. Wing is unconquerable and her stepmother secretly cares about her very much. This was one of the more insightful teenage films that understood teenage psychology and was also optmistic in a realistic way.

Director Teguh Karya intended to make a “real” comedy amidst the many slapstick comedies at the time, and in fact calls this film a bitter comedy. In the film, Ms. Sumirah, a widow who used to be a favourite pretty girl in Padalarang, worries about her daughter Anna, who is shy and self-conscious. She keeps pushing Anna’s brother, Willy, to invite home a co-worker from the clothing factory he works in. Then a change occurs after Anna meets Jaka, an English teacher living near her house. When their relationship starts to bloom, it is found out that Jaka is the son of Saodah, a woman who once had an affair with Sumirah’s husband, Van Nijs. Sumirah changes her mind and opposes their relationship. Finally Anna and Jaka elope.

Norman’s house is robbed but one of the robbers, Bing, is captured when his car hits a building. Bing is the husband of Hayati, Norman’s ex-fiancee. The leader of the gang, Wikarta, kidnaps Bing’s wife and children to ensure that Bing will not confess to the police. Wikarta, is actually in love with Hayati, and takes the opportunity to win her heart. The victim of the robbery, Norman, decides to take matters into his own hands, and gangs up with Godfried, a reformed criminal. The police set their deadline: two times 24 hours. When they finally catch the crooks, it is proven that Bing was forced to join the robbers because he lost too much in gambling.

Nanang is often teased by children of his age, so he prefers to play with his aunt, Lilis, who wants to be a singer. Grandfather does not approve of this, and gets angry when he finds out that Lilis will have a recording on national radio. Lilis is forbidden to sing again. But when grandfather listens to Lilis’ song on the radio, he is touched. When Nanang’s father returns, his friends stop teasing him.

As a result, he also quarrels with his lover, Pijah, and her father, Misral. Samsu then becomes a fisherman. Lukitaningsih tries to lure Samsu and the co-op to bull racing, which is one of Samsu’s skills. Seeing her efforts, Lukitaningsih’s driver, Dani, is envious and instigates Mahmud, against Samsu. Meanwhile, Misral and Pijah begin to understand Samsu so they change the co-op to the way that Samsu wants it to be, and they reconcile. Meanwhile, Mahmud loses the bull race and his carok challenge is answered with a friendly handshake instead.

As the Dutch troops attack, guided by the traitorous spy, Dendam, the fighters are forced to keep changing their position.
