In the late fifties Iceland was isolated and backwards. Industrialisation had really just begun and the country was taking it’s first steps towards the ultra-modern society we know today. The US military set up a base next to the sleepy fishing village of Keflavik on the south coast turning everything on it’s head. The Americans outnumbered the locals three to one. Culturally it was as if a UFO had landed. The young people were more open to cultural influences than the older generation and this triggered a rock and roll explosion which then swept the rest of the country. It was the birth of Icelandic teenage culture. Because of Iceland’s location right between America and Europe the cultural influences mixed to produce an unique blend.
Punk in Iceland
Sound Designer
In 1978 the world was on the brink of nuclear war and cold war foes were everywhere. A new kind of revolutionary music had emerged in 1976 but was receeding everywhere except in Iceland that had not yet seen punk rock. There you had Russian commie ghosts, nuclear foes, currency restrictions, beer was illegal and the TV was b/w six days a week. The population was trying to spend every penny as fast as they could because of inflation. Then in 1978 The Stranglers held a concert in remote Iceland and the punk rock bomb exploded in the face of the disco freaks.

Land Without Arms
Music
A documentary about the perennially controversial issue of the U.S. Nato Base in Iceland. After overing the historical background of the bace, the film deals with the present situation from three different viewpoints: A) The role of the base in the context of international warfare in the North Atlantic and how Iceland would be defended in case of crises; B) The social impact that the presence of these forces has had on everyday life in Iceland, especially the surrounding communities; C) The economical importance of the base in Icelandic society. The film is an objective study of the situation and its author's purpose is to inform rather than influence the viewer.
