Jens Månsson has big financial problems and realizes that he probably has to leave his dear Skåne farm Gåsabo. But suddenly, he inherits a fortune from his brother John in America.
Hilda Granström has a ladies tailoring shop. Her husband Richard is a cellist in the Opera Orchestra. Their three daughters are helping out in Hilda's shop. Richard's 80-year-old mother, who once was a dancer, also lives with the family.
Maggi meets David after having missed her train, and they spend the night together. Penniless, the young lovers break into a summer cottage. The owner, Håkansson, offers to rent it to them, but he has an ulterior motive. By living together, they have to face their pasts and deal with the meddling neighbors and authorities.
