In 1950s Copenhagen, Jens is a law student with a part-time job in a law firm. He lives at home and is more or less engaged to Lis. Jens' life is very regular and organized until he meets slightly older Erhard, a head clerk at the firm. Erhard lures Jens into the mysterious city nightlife, and from now on, Jens' life changes. The engagement is broken off and his education is neglected.

The Snooks (singular!) derives his name from the Danish expression "leaving the Snooks behind" much used by 7-year-old Eigil's parents to indicate somebody's going nuts. This being a live action-cum-puppet animation film, Eigil's own imagination turns the Snooks into an amiable gnome-like little fellow and best friend during a summer holiday. When they are being joined by a cat, the fun really begins.

In 1943, where everything was prohibited, and the Nazi grip on the Danish population tightened, more and more growing resistance to the occupation quite naturally in the Danish population. In Aarhus break 2 young men, Holger Mikkelsen (Ole Lemmeke) and Leo (Per Morberg) into a company who sympathize with the Germans, and burn repairer. It had been a close thing, but when, however, to reach safety before occupying forces emerge.

A new foreman, Huus, arrives in a sleepy Danish village, much to the delight of the unmarried women there. However, Huus becomes very friendly with Katinka and her husband, Bai, the stationmaster.
