History
Chongyan Liu is an artist/filmmaker living and studying in Lille who was born in Guizhou, China, in 1995. After graduating from CAFA: Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 2017 and having obtained her master's degree from the Beaux-Arts de Paris, France, in 2022, she is now pursuing a post-graduate program at Le Fresnoy - studio national des arts contemporains. Chongyan practices in various artistic disciplines: documentary and fiction filmmaking, video installation, painting, and sculpture.
Her work has been presented at many international film festivals, including IDFA, Beijing International Short Film Festival, The 10th edition of VISIO European Programme on Artist's Moving Images, Seoul International Pride Film Festival, Videoex, Fragments Festival, etc.
Thematically, her oeuvre tackles various political and sociological issues. She draws from her own experiences while maintaining a compassionate outlook, which seeks to illustrate the nuances within every interpersonal relationship depicted on-screen. Chongyan has worked on a multitude of video art/experimental documentary pieces before writing & directing two short-fiction films: The Harryian Theory and Speak in a Whisper. Her MFA graduation show in Paris deals with the delicate subject of the suicide of a trans woman to whom Chongyan was a friend.
Chongyan is currently focused on the overlapping nature of video art and film, hoping to combine these mediums of moving images well into the future. Chongyan's multidisciplinary approach to filmmaking ensures that her work constantly challenges the preconceived notions of the practice.
