D’origine belge, Jean Roland Rougerie naît le 9 mars 1929 à Neuilly-sur-Seine. Rien ne semble prédestiner, a priori, ce fils de financier à opter pour une carrière artistique. Mais, son père ne s’opposant pas à sa vocation théâtrale, le jeune Jean tente le concours d’entrée au Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique de Paris… où il est recalé. Néanmoins, Jean Rougerie connaîtra une carrière théâtrale dense, à la fois comme comédien, metteur en scène et directeur de théâtre. Dirigeant, notamment, le Théâtre du Château de Fontainebleau et le Théâtre Firmin Gémier, il adapte Eugène Ionesco, Prosper Mérimée, Molière, Marivaux, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Eugène Labiche, Emile Zola, Dostoïevski… Pour ce qui est du grand écran, il aborde d’abord très lointainement les plateaux de cinéma durant deux décennies, jouant pour la première fois dans «Monsieur Vincent» (1947), avec Pierre Fresnay. Ce n’est que dans les années soixante-dix qu’il s’investit sérieusement dans une carrière cinématographique. Dans «Lacombe Lucien» (1973), il interprète un ancien flic travaillant pour le compte des allemands, lors de l’Occupation. Il s’agit sans doute de l’un de ses rôles les plus importants, ainsi que l’un de ses meilleurs films, mis en scène avec application par Louis Malle. Il campe ensuite des silhouettes furtives pourLuis Buñuel avec «Le fantôme de la liberté» (1974), puis pour Bertrand Tavernier avec «Que la fête commence» (1974). Robert Lamoureux lui offre un rôle d’officier nazi dans «On a retrouvé la septième compagnie!» (1975) avec Jean Lefebvre, puis on le voit en premier ministre dans «La raison d’état» (1978) de André Cayatte. Bertrand Blier sait mettre à profit sa bouille légèrement ahurie dans «Préparez vos mouchoirs» (1977), où il est le père P.D.G. d’un enfant surdoué, puis dans «Buffet froid» (1978), où il tient le rôle du témoin. Des personnages parfois cocasses, souvent inquiétants et teintés d’ambiguïté, pour un comédien au physique singulier, parfait pour des rôles de salauds.

It appears that Nemrod was killed on a train after he arrived in France, but Edouard denies any knowledge of what happened.
