History

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.   Robert Kelly Slater (born February 11, 1972, Cocoa Beach, FL, USA) is an American professional surfer known for his competitive prowess and style. He has been crowned ASP World Champion a record 10 times, including 5 consecutive titles from 1994–98. He is the youngest (at age 20) and the oldest (at age 38) to win the title. Upon winning his 5th world title in 1997, Slater passed Australian surfing legend Mark Richards to become the most successful champion in the history of the sport. In 2007 he also became the all-time leader in career event wins by winning the Boost Mobile Pro event at Lower Trestles near San Clemente, California. The previous record was held by Slater's childhood hero, 3-time world champion Tom Curren. In addition to the ASP tour, Slater has also competed in the X-Games (in 2003 and 2004). On October 3, 2008, Slater won his ninth ASP world title at the Billabong Pro Mundaka by defeating local surfer Eneko Acero in the 3rd round. In May 2005, in the final heat of the Billabong Tahiti Pro contest at Teahupo'o, Slater became the first surfer ever to be awarded two perfect scores for a total 20 out of 20 points under the ASP two-wave scoring system. (The corresponding honor under the previous three-wave system belongs to fellow American Shane Beschen who achieved the feat in 1996.) Since 1990, Slater has been sponsored primarily by surfwear industry giant Quiksilver. He exclusively rides Channel Islands surfboards equipped with his own signature series of FCS fins. A Fly in the Champagne
himself
After a decade of bitter rival status, Kelly Slater and Andy Irons come together to surf off their differences! To get two seemingly mortal enemies to agree to sequester themselves on a tiny island with a half dozen camera men, a Hollywood interviewer capable of conjuring up tears during any interview, and an in-the-know magazine staff waiting with bated breath seemed like a ridiculous notion. The end result was a ten day purge of feelings, emotional baggage, dispelling rumors, talking it out, and a burying of the hatchet once and for all. Oh, and we forgot to mention that the waves were insane! Check out the documentary of two of the best surfers and biggest rivals of our sport battle it out in an epic boat trip in Indonesia.

For a Few Barrels More
The producers of A Fistful of Barrels and A Bowlful of Chile serve up another slice of 'Somewhere', and this time it's all Bagus! The ASP World Tour descends on Bali in search of Indonesian barrels, babes and Bintangs. In what was possibly the least mysterious event location in the short history of The Search campaign, Rip Curl opted to pay the boys of the Top 44 back for last year's Chilean hell-trip and hold this year's Somewhere event in the well-tracked, and in this case, well-oiled waters off of Bali. Far be it from us to be the spoilers, though. If you can't figure out where these perfectly groomed left-hand barrels are, do the legwork yourself and you'll reap the rewards. Relax and enjoy watching Kelly Slater completely dominate the rest of the Top 44, before bowing out and letting the young Turks have their day. The all-Hawaiian final featured Bruce Irons besting Freddy P to retire comfortably from the Tour in the knowledge that he's got what it takes to take home a win.

Chasing Dora
Chasing Dora is the story of three California surfers who decided to bring to life an epic challenge thrown down by one of surfing's greatest stylists, the renowned maverick, Miki Dora, who died in 2002 at age 67. Dora was one of the sport's iconic figures. He railed against the commercialization of surfing, yet endorsed one of the best-selling surfboard models of the mid-'60s surf boom; he decried competitive surfing, yet still chose to enter some, and floated schemes to promote others; he shunned publicity, yet managed to use the surf media to create an almost mythic persona for himself. Chasing Dora takes on one of his radical ideas--that the ultimate test of a truly great surfer would be in a contest for the longest wave ridden, on a self-made wooden board, with no equipment or accessories that stemmed from the industrial age--no plastics, no neoprene suits, no surf leashes.

The Santa Cruz Harbor section, Tom Curren at his own private surfing spot, Kelly Slater at a secret spot in California, Ratboy in Indonesia and Flea surfing Mavericks all shot in 16mm. And dont forget Shawn Barney Barron pulling off the one-of-a-kind maneuver The Barrel Roll. Barney completes a full 360 standing up inside the tube of a wave. A move that has never been done again.
Fanning the Fire
"He's good competitively. He's exciting as a free surfer. Mick's got a big future for sure. "-Kelly Slater (Typically bland,). "He surfs that good it actually pisses people off."-Joel Parkinson (typical Ozzie,), "Mick Fanning rips". Fanning The Fire is an incredible document of the beginning of what was to become a very illustrious career.

Shelter
Himself
In 2001 Woodshed Films released their third Moonshine Experiment surf movie entitled “Shelter.” With a similar style and feel to the first two Moonshine Experiments, “Thicker Than Water” and “September Sessions”, “Shelter” is one of Taylor Steele and Chris Malloy’s best productions. This surf movie does a great job of staying far away from the politics of surfing and focuses more on soul surfing. However, don’t think that there aren’t any surfers worth watching in this movie because there are plenty. “Shelter” is jam packed with professional and well-known surfers such as Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Joel Tudor, Mick Fanning, Dean Morrison, Jack Johnson, The Malloy’s, Kelly Slater, Nat Young, Donavon Frankenreiter, Shane Dorian, Jon Swift and many more. The soundtrack for “Shelter” is similar to “Thicker Than Water” and “September Sessions”. It has a slower and mellower feel, featuring artists such as Mason Jennings, The Shins, White Buffalo and even surfers Jon Swift and Rob Machado.
Hit & Run
Himself
After year's of silly stunts and goofy skits, HIT & RUN (2000) takes a more serious look at what makes these top pros tick through a series of intimate interviews paired with the cutting edge of performance surfing. Great sections from the Bruce Irons, Andy Irons, The Hobgoods, Donavon Frankenreiter, Shane Dorian, Rob Machado, Kelly Slater and more.
Thicker Than Water
Himself
Chris Malloy, Emmett Malloy, and Jack Johnson got together to document the life and times of a pro surfer. Shot all on 16mm Film "Thicker Than Water" follows Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Brad Gerlach, Shane Dorian, and others on a 18 month journey through the North Atlantic, South Pacific, and the Bay of Bengal.
Loose Change
With a decidedly comedic approach Loose Change takes on the age old question "what would a pro surfer be doing if he didn't surf?" In between the surfing segments, viewers follow Rob Machado as "the slacker" traveling around his home town looking for work. On his way, he meets up with today's best surfers as their non- surfing counterparts. The acting is hilarious and the surfing is off the scale.
Billabong Challenge: Nine 9 Lives
The last of the BILLABONG CHALLENGE series; Challenge Four, in Indo, and Challenge Five, in Australia. Indo did not deliver the surf necessary to complete one round so it was cancelled until the following year. Starring Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, Luke Egan, Shane Dorian, Tom Curren, Sunny Garcia, Mark Occhilupo, Taylor Knox, Pancho Sullivan, with appearances by Margo and Kelly Slater. Winner of "Surfer Magazine’s Video of the Year Award" 2000 Best Cinematography Award.

The Show
Greg Browning as a lost space traveler, Chris Malloy as a cowboy, Shane Dorian and Taylor Knox as street thugs, Rob Machado as the Godfather? Sounds more like a night at the local multiplex than one of the greatest surf films of all time.
Billabong Challenge: Jefrey's Bay
The second BILLABONG CHALLENGE continued the pursuit of great surfing waves. Held in massive surf on the last day of the 10 day waiting period at one of the world's most perfect rights, Jeffrey's Bay South Africa. Top international surfers battled the rising swell for US $50,000:00; challenging each other, the awesome forces of the sea and their own personal stamina. Featuring the surfing of Kelly Slater, Mark Occhilupo, Warren Dean, Brenden Margieson, Johnny Boy Gomes and Shane Powell.
Billabong Challenge: The Mystery Left
Most professional surfing contests hold their final at a charity beach on a Sunday afternoon regardless of wave quality. The Billabong Challenge, a bold new direction in competition surfing, enticed 8 hot surfers from around the globe to battle a dangerous shark infested reef, at a secret location on the remote desert coast of Outback Australia. Held over a 14 day period, enduring harsh elements, till time and tide set perfect conditions for the ultimate challenge.
Focus
Poor Specimen Productions presents a Taylor Steele film featuring Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Taylor Knox, Donovan Frankenreiter, Justin Postin, Sunny Garcia and introducing Tim Curran!
Momentum 2
After Momentum I... the next logical step? MOMENTUM II. More polish. More production. More ripping. But the formula remains the same. Sick sections from the next generation of rising talents. Kelly Slater. Rob Machado. Shane Dorian. Taylor Knox. Kalani Robb. Benji Weatherly. And more. No one could have predicted the success of the first Momentum. And Taylor's immediate response -- even before it's success -- was to keep doing what he was doing: documenting a new generation of rising talent.
Momentum
MOMENTUM marks the beginning of a new era in surfing. Featuring some of the first sections of New School surfers Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Benji Weatherly, Kalani Robb and more, Taylor Steele's 1991 breakout VHS release changed the way surf movies were made for the next decade and became the namesake for The Momentum Generation of surfers. In 2007, Momentum was listed as #3 on Surfing Magazine's "Greatest Surf Movies of All Time."
One Step Beyond
Before there was Momentum, Taylor Steele released ONE STEP BEYOND (1991). This was the follow-up to his high school project Seaside, filmed entirely at Seaside in Cardiff...so the natural progression was to go "one step beyond." The film features his first section-based edits and his first full section with a young Kelly Slater. Also of note are sections with Tom Curren, Brad Gerlach and Johnny Boy Gomes, as well as a classic wipeouts compilation.
Surfers: The Movie
A largely forgotten film from a transitional time in surfing history. Clips were used in songs in Anderson .Paak's albums "Venice" and "Malibu".
The Day Newport Died
A movie from shorescrew productions chalk full of the best girls, freaks, fights and desctruction we have to offer, all smashed between some of the best waves Newport's ever had, plus scandalous adventures in other places we'd like to live, but for some reason don't.
The Movement
If this movie doesn't amp you up you might be dead! Shot by asl's super vid kid Kai Neville with partner in crime Dion Agius. The Movement showcases contemporary ripping from the world's best surfers. And as well as all the bonus extras you've come to expect, there's cool mini flicks from Billabong and Quiksilver.
