Roland Klick bricht ein Studium der Theaterwissenschaften und der Germanistik ab, um eine Karriere beim Film zu starten. Am Deutschen Institut für Film und Fernsehen ist er 1962/63 als Kameramann beiRalf Schünzels Dokumentarfilm "München – Tagebuch eines Studenten" tätig. Nach ersten eigenen Kurzfilmen sowie dem 50-minütigen Spielfilm "Jimmy Orpheus" (1966) gibt Klick mit dem beklemmenden Drama "Bübchen" 1968 sein Langfilmdebüt. Trotz des kontroversen Themas - "Bübchen" erzählt von einem Zehnjährigen, der seine kleine Schwester tötet und die Leiche versteckt - wird der Film mit einem Bundesfilmpreis für die Darstellerin Renate Roland geehrt; Klick selbst wird von Kollegen und Kritikern als eine der großen Hoffnungen des deutschen Films gefeiert. Seinen nächsten Film, den in Israel gedrehten Thriller "Deadlock" (1970) mit Mario Adorf, inszeniert Klick in einer gänzlich anderen Stilistik als das Großstadt-Drama "Bübchen": Bei der Geschichte von drei Gangstern, die sich in einer Geisterstadt in der Wüste einen Kampf um die Beute eines Bankraubs liefern, orientiert er sich an der Ästhetik des Italo-Western. Von der Kritik auf Grund seiner Betonung der Action-Elemente zwiespältig aufgenommen, wird Klick mit einem Deutschen Filmpreis als "Bester Regisseur" ausgezeichnet. Beim Publikum findet der langsam und lakonisch erzählte "Deadlock" allerdings nicht den erhofften Anklang. Drei Jahre später legt Klick, der sich immer wieder vom Kunstanspruch des "Neuen Deutschen Films" distanziert und betont, Publikumsfilme drehen zu wollen, mit "Supermarkt" (1973) ein Milieu-Drama nach amerikanischen Genremustern vor. Auch dieser Film wird von der Kritik hoch gelobt; Roland Klick erhält einen Bundesfilmpreis für die "Beste Regie",Walter Kohuit einen Darstellerpreis. Nach der Simmel-Verfilmung "Lieb Vaterland magst ruhig sein" (1975; Bundesfilmpreis für den Kameraman Jost Vacano) und dem Dokumentarfilm "Derby Fever USA" (1979; Bundesfilmpreis in Silber) über Pferderennen soll Klick 1981 den Bestseller "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" fürs Kino inszenieren, bricht das Projekt jedoch wegen kreativer Differenzen mit den Produzenten zwei Wochen vor Drehbeginn ab. Die Realisierung seines kurzfristig anberaumtem Alternativprojekts "White Star" zieht sich auf Grund der Kokainsucht und der daraus resultierenden Ausfälle des Hauptdarstellers Dennis Hopper über zwei Jahre hin. 1983 kommt der Film als Fragment in die Kinos. Wieder wird Klick mit dem Bundesfilmpreis in der Kategorie Regie ausgezeichnet, kommerziell erweist aber auch dieser Film sich als Misserfolg. Mit der Komödie "Schluckauf" (1987-1992) über eine junge Frau aus der Provinz, die nach Berlin zieht, um Fotomodell zu werden, inszeniert Klick seinen bislang letzten Kinofilm. Anfang der 1990er Jahre zieht er sich als Autor nach Irland zurück, wo er bis heute lebt.
