Ranjyot, Amar and their widowed mother flee from Rampur after their friend, Karim, informs them that their village is about to be attacked by Muslim shortly after the 1948 partition of India and Pakistan. The threesome manage to survive and end up in Dharampur in Punjab. They are re-united with Karim when both brothers get married to Jeeto and Satwant.

Harnek Singh alias Nek (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is an honest farm worker who works hard for his employer, landlord Jagirdar Joginder Singh (Amrish Puri). A good-hearted taxi-driver (Amol Palelar) goes out of his way to help his customers, and when times turn bad for him, and he has no one to turn to, his former customers come to assistance. The other priority on his shoulders is to marry - but before that he must accomplish himself.
