In September 2011 R.E.M., the rock band from Athens, Georgia, decided to call it a day after 31 years. This collection from the BBC archives includes performances of Pretty Persuasion from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1984, Orange Crush on Top of the Pops in 1989 and special acoustic versions of Losing My Religion and Half a World Away on The Late Show in 1991, along with performances on Later with Jools Holland and Parkinson. Also, vocalist Michael Stipe and bassist Mike Mills reflect on the band ending.
R.E.M. returned to MTV Unplugged at TRL Studio at MTV Studios on May 21, 2001. The baroque pop set leaned heavily on tracks from the band's 12th studio album, Reveal.
R.E.M. recorded this live performance on March 13, 2008 for the television series Austin City Limits and aired on PBS starting March 24, 2008. The DVD release includes three songs not broadcast on the television program—"So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)", "Fall on Me", and "Imitation of Life."; The setlist is heavy on songs from their upcoming album, Accelerate, but features classic hits "Drive", "Losing My Religion" and "Man on the Moon."

Other concert highlights include the appearance of two then-new songs, "Bad Day" (Also originally known as PSA when first written in the early 1980's) and "Animal", and the re-emergence of the long-lost song "Permanent Vacation". "Permanent Vacation" dates back to 1980, years before their first album, while "Bad Day" dates back to 1985.
