In the present, artist Tom Warshaw recalls his traumatic coming of age. As a 13-year-old growing up in New York City in 1973, Tom hangs out with Pappass, a mentally disabled man. With Tom's mother battling depression after the death of her husband, the young boy is left to his own devices. When Tom develops a crush on schoolmate Melissa, Pappass feels abandoned and begins behaving erratically.

When young Buddy falls into Santa's gift sack on Christmas Eve, he's transported back to the North Pole and raised as a toy-making elf by Santa's helpers. But as he grows into adulthood, he can't shake the nagging feeling that he doesn't belong. Buddy vows to visit Manhattan and find his real dad, a workaholic publisher.

By Courier is a 2000 English language short film adapted from a story by O. Henry and directed by Peter Riegert, starring Garret Dillahunt, Claire Lautier and Joey Temperini. It follows two lovers who are no longer speaking. As articulate and intelligent as they are, they can’t breach this gap without the “poetic” assistance of a 13-year-old from the wrong side of the tracks. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
