Evan Dunham was expected to face George Sotiropoulos at the event, but was forced off the card with an injury and replaced by Rafael dos Anjos. Jason Miller was scheduled to face Aaron Simpson at this event. However, Miller was removed from the card after accepting a coaching position on The Ultimate Fighter 14, and replaced by Brad Tavares. Cub Swanson was expected to face Erik Koch at this event, but was forced from the bout with an injury. Koch was instead moved to UFC Fight Night 25 to take on Jonathan Brookins.

WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone was a mixed martial arts event held by World Extreme Cagefighting on January 25, 2009. It aired live on the Versus Network. In the main event WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner defended his title against number one contender and undefeated Donald Cerrone. Also featured on the card was a rematch between former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver.

WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown took place on November 5, 2008 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The event aired live on the Versus Network.
