It was the first physical (non-digital download) release by the band since guitarist Porl Thompson returned to the lineup.

Trilogy was recorded on two consecutive nights, 11–12 November 2002, at the Tempodrom arena in Berlin.

Robert Smith agreed to release a greatest hits album under the condition that he could choose the tracks himself.
