Sinopsis
As Part I opens, Jubei (Denjiro Okochi), the best of sea skippers, is unable to overcome the stormy seas of Luzon. All hands on board the Kannonmaru were lost except for Shinkei, who alone made his way to land & eventually home to inform his grandson Jiromaru (Kinnosuke Nakamura) that his father Jubei met with disaster. Young Jiromaru tells his grandfather that he doesn't want to be a skipper like his father, but wants to go to Kyoto and become a samurai…
Japón, mediados del siglo XIX. Seibei Iguchi es un samurái de bajo rango que trabaja como burócrata. Viudo, vive con sus dos hijas, a las que adora, y con una madre ya senil, por lo que se ve obligado a hacer otros trabajos para poder sacarlas adelante. Una nueva oportunidad se presenta en su vida cuando se entera de que Tomoe, su amor de siempre, se ha divorciado de su cruel marido. La historia narra las aventuras de un grupo de samuráis liderados por Igo Gyobu (Ken Ogata), que luchan por defender al heredero del Shogun de su propio padre Iemitsu. Los motivos que le llevan a buscar la muerte de su hijo forman parte de su locura y excentricismo, considerándole demasiado débil para su sucesión. Librarse de él con tan poderosa protección solo será posible tendiéndoles una trampa en su viaje a Edo.
