Dreamland (1992)

Un anónimo protagonista mantiene diversas conversaciones con personas distintas que parecen entrar y salir de su vida sin motivo alguno. Pero paulatinamente se atisba un propósito detrás de las crípticas y profundas charlas. Una frase, "dream is destiny" (el sueño es el destino), expresa la idea básica de la película: atreverse a entrar en el incontrolable mundo de los sueños, tan apasionante como inquietante y oscuro, y permitirse disfrutar al máximo del instante eterno que dura.

Una antigua estrella del pop (Martin Freeman) atraviesa un periodo de crisis debido tanto a su trabajo como a su relación con su novia de siempre (Gwyneth Paltrow). Penélope Cruz es el contrapunto romántico de la historia, y Danny DeVito interpreta al psiquiatra que lo atiende.

An animated film drawn entirely in pastels. Various fantastical plant-like things "grow" from the ground, eventually launching five spheres. The spheres drift in space while changing shapes and come back down to another setting, which eventually becomes more fantastical and symbolic than the opening one. The soundtrack has a jazz slant, with an ensemble of four saxophones and synthetic sound (i.e. sound created by drawing directly on the soundtrack).

The very first images in the film set unprecedented standards in East German animated film: a Buñuelean eye that fills the entire screen, real-life sequences of fleeing animals and a sound collage running contrary to what is seen on the screen. This also extends to the protagonist of the film, a head on a foot without a body or arms who pads wearily through the depressing surroundings. Upon seeing various figures in the sky, he begins to copy their movements. To his surprise, he himself manages to grow wings and takes to the skies. But his attempt at flight ends in a sobering manner however, as it is revealed that flying creatures are just restricted in their range.
