Trace (2012)

ANA ANA is a cinematic poem about four young creative Egyptian women. Most of the material is filmed by the characters themselves, who worked with the film’s directors in a process of collaboration and mentorship over a course of two years. The four main characters find creative ways to express what is hidden within their hearts: speaking of their dreams and desires in an extraordinarily open and intimate way, and using metaphors, and cinematic storytelling to transform the every-day struggles of their lives into the sublime. Set in the overwhelming chaos of Cairo, the film also oscillates back and forth between an empty and abstract desert, which might be real or unreal.

In 1964 a colossal pre-Hispanic monolith was taken from the town of San Miguel Coatlinchan in the state of Mexico and brought to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Since then, the absence of the monolith has been present in the memories of the inhabitants, as well as in endless reproductions and ripostes.

The victims stories are surrounded by statements of experts about the historical and medical background, among others: Elisabeth Brainin, doctor of psychiatrics, Wolfgang Neugebauer, chairman of the documentary archives of Austrian resistance, and Werner Vogt, medical doctor, who was engaged in a defamation court battle with Heinrich Gross (and aquitted in 1981). Dr Gross' trial started on March, 21 in Vienna. After one hour the judge adjourned the proceedings for an indefinite time, ruling that Dr. Gross was not mental fit enough to follow the trial.
