En el transcurso de una partida de cartas entre mujeres, Lorrie Dellman comenta al resto de sus compañeras que mantiene algo más que un idilio con sus respectivos maridos. Tan íntima confesión causa una histeria colectiva en el grupo, que desemboca en los consiguientes conflictos matrimoniales. En una ocasión, el esposo de Lorrie sorprende a ésta con su amante de turno y, ciego de celos, dispara contra ellos matando a los dos. Poco después es acusado de asesinato. Una vez en la cárcel, un compañero médico que le debe un favor colabora con él para que su huida tenga éxito. Sin embargo, la policía vuelve a capturarle.
