Durante una Nochevieja, en un hotel de Los Ángeles, un botones es continuamente solicitado por los ocupantes de cuatro habitaciones. En una de ellas se han reunido unas brujas, en otra un hombre apunta con un revólver a su mujer, que está atada a la cama, en la tercera un gángster y su mujer le piden que cuide a sus hijos y en la cuarta dos hombres realizan una arriesgada apuesta.

Cuando Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) cumple los cuarenta decide no esperar más y recurre a la inseminación artificial para tener un bebé. Siete años más tarde, regresa a Nueva York y se reencuentra con su amigo Wally (Bateman), un hombre neurótico e inseguro, que, de manera inexplicable se siente fuertemente vinculado al hijo de Kassie, el pequeño Sebastian (Thomas Robinson), un niño con el que comparte algo más que sus múltiples manías y excentricidades. Basada en el relato "Baster", del novelista ganador del premio Pulitzer Jeffrey Eugenides, autor de "Las vírgenes suicidas".

A lo largo de varias historias, Allen aborda de una forma desenfadada y absolutamente descarada y cómica alguno de los tabús y las facetas más bochornosas e intocables de la sexualidad humana. A physician who helps his clients bring new life into the world is accused of an ethical breach that's also criminal in this independent drama. Dr. Freeman (Colm Feore) is a doctor who runs an upscale fertility clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada. Freeman specializes in helping women who have had trouble getting pregnant conceive, usually through artificial insemination techniques or transplanting donated eggs into his patients. Over the course of several weeks, Freeman inseminates nine women from different walks of life, eight become pregnant and give birth to healthy children, but when the new mothers compare notes, they discover their children bear a striking resemblance to one another...

A Japan-set battle-royale comedy over a vial of sperm is centered around three women on the verge of a nervous breakdown from hearing their biological clock ticking away: a doctor and manager of a sperm bank, Sana Kobayashi, a single mother, Maron Kuribayashi, and an alluring receptionist, Mayumi Kujō. Unknowingly, the three shared a beloved partner and a sperm donor, Makoto, but lost him in a sudden accident. The night of Makoto's funeral they are shocked to discover each other in his room. In a rage of screaming, thrashing, and boasting about their own sexual prowess with Makoto, more fierce emotions erupt once Sana's plan to self-inseminate is exposed, but this leads to unexpected consequences. They affirm their real love for Makoto and reveal his true wishes.

A young reporter girl nicknamed Cream Pie writes an article on money-making in small businesses. She meets a married shoemaker who falls for her and steals his wife's money for their love nest, but Cream Pie discovers it by accident and takes it to the newspapers' office. Shoemaker's wife interferes into this whole confusion and the whole fuss resolves at a hospital.

Dorothy (Fiona Samuel), a lone swimmer, luxuriates in tranquil bliss at a deserted pool — only to have her solitude rudely interrupted by a squad of swimmers. A wordless, strikingly choreographed conflict ensues as Dorothy attempts to assert herself against the dehumanised aggression of the swimmers.

It is a variation on the original legend of Alraune in which a Mad Scientist creates a beautiful but demonic child from the forced union between a woman and a Mandrake root. Not to be confused with the 1918 German version of Alraune.
