Ambientada durante la ocupación Nazi de Checoslovaquia, relata la vida de Milos, un joven funcionario de los ferrocarriles checos que carga con el karma de una genealogía de perdedores y desgraciados que han escapado heroicamente al modelo de vida de un hombre responsable a base de trampas y otras artimañas. Erich Kästner’s beloved novel has been adapted for film or television six times since its publication in 1929; this 1935 British version was the first in English. Believed lost for decades, it was recently rediscovered by the BFI and has now been restored. The film moves the action from Berlin to London, where Emil goes to stay with his grandmother and cousin. A Mexican bandit is about to be executed in the United States, so his brother takes over a train and holds the passengers as hostages unless his brother is released. Now both the Americans and Mexicans are baffled as to what to do. One of the passengers — who wrote the letter for their captor — has a suggestion: call mercenaries Hank Brackett and Johnny Reech. They do, and as expected they do come up with a plan, but the president of the railroad is not sure if it will work.
