Erich Kästner’s beloved novel has been adapted for film or television six times since its publication in 1929; this 1935 British version was the first in English. Believed lost for decades, it was recently rediscovered by the BFI and has now been restored. The film moves the action from Berlin to London, where Emil goes to stay with his grandmother and cousin. Thereafter, the tale of Emil’s adventures with a gang of streetwise London children faithfully follows the original plot.

Не найдя у него ключа, бандиты взрывают ящик, хватают то, что в нем лежит, и убегают, прихватив также три больших почтовых мешка. Двое других грабителей в это время захватывают паровоз. Преступники вынуждают машиниста отцепить паровоз и протянуть его вперед на 100 футов. По требованию грабителей пассажиры выходят из вагонов и выстраиваются с поднятыми руками вдоль поезда. В это время бандиты собирают деньги и драгоценности. После того, как все ценности отобраны, бандиты бегут к паровозу, предварительно сделав несколько выстрелов в воздух для устрашения пассажиров. Последние сразу же бросаются к раненому, чтобы оказать ему помощь. Грабители садятся на паровоз и приказывают машинисту немедленно отъезжать.

First Thursday of each month, the members of Stockholm's model railroad club meet and run their beloved trains on a schedule. The trains pass towns such as Bångfors and Farsarvet. Sometimes, a delay occurs, which then spreads throughout the network.

A Mexican bandit is about to be executed in the United States, so his brother takes over a train and holds the passengers as hostages unless his brother is released. Now both the Americans and Mexicans are baffled as to what to do. One of the passengers — who wrote the letter for their captor — has a suggestion: call mercenaries Hank Brackett and Johnny Reech. They do, and as expected they do come up with a plan, but the president of the railroad is not sure if it will work.
