Sinopsis
En Montreal, el arribista Jeffrey Byron (Jonny Lee Miller) está a punto de cerrar otro lucrativo negocio. Aunque es joven, posee un agudo olfato comercial. A su esposa Marianne (Lara Flynn Boyle) le disgusta su excesiva entrega al trabajo y se siente frustrada por no poder satisfacer su deseo de ser madre. Al otro lado de la ciudad, vive Lucky "arreglalotodo" Mann (Nick Nolte), un contratista de obras y reparaciones, que está casado con Phyllis (Julie Christie), una ex-actriz de películas de serie B. Thanks to his wife Madeleine, a social worker who saved him from the street when he was 17-years-old, Pierre Dalpé has become a prosperous entrepreneur, running a garbage-collection business in the Montreal area. His quiet happiness with his wife and their children changes when he crosses paths with Eve, a teenage drug addict/prostitute who belongs to a street gang.
