Mientras pasan las vacaciones en una casa cerca de un lago, un matrimonio neoyorquino (Naomi Watts y Tim Roth) y su hijo de diez años (Devon Gearhart) son víctimas del ataque de unos jóvenes. Anna (Naomi Watts), su marido George (Tim Roth) y su hijo de diez años (Devon Gearhart) se van a descansar a su residencia de vacaciones situada al lado de un lago. Nada más llegar, aparecen dos jóvenes (Michael Pitt y Brady Corbet) aparentemente muy educados que dicen ser amigos de los vecinos y que les piden unos huevos. El Asesino del Zodiaco mató, entre 1966 y 1978, a numerosas personas en San Francisco, al tiempo que enviaba a los medios de comunicación cartas con pistas. La acción se centra en las largas pesquisas de dos detectives que intentaron darle caza y en las investigaciones de dos periodistas que trataron de averiguar su identidad...

Neil McCauley es un experto ladrón. Su filosofía consiste en vivir sin ataduras que puedan constituir un obstáculo, si las cosas se complican. Su banda la forman criminales profesionales tan cualificados que pueden impresionar incluso al detective Vincent Hanna. Pero Hannah vive tan obsesionado con su trabajo que llega incluso a poner en peligro su relación sentimental. Cuando la banda de McCauley prepara el golpe definitivo y el equipo de Hannah intenta evitarlo, cada uno de ellos comprende que tiene que vérselas con una de las mentes más brillantes a la que se ha enfrentado en su carrera.

Corea del Sur, 1986. Una joven aparece brutalmente violada y asesinada. Dos meses después, se producen una serie de violaciones y asesinatos en circunstancias similares. Para buscar al asesino, se organiza un destacamento especial, encabezado por un detective de la policía local (Park Doo-man) y un detective de la policía de Seúl (Seo Tae-yoon), que ha solicitado ser asignado al caso.

Un hombre aparece muerto en la cama de un tiro en la nuca. Frank (Al Pacino), el policía encargado del caso, sospecha que lo ha asesinado una mujer. Un compañero (John Goodman) que se ocupa de un caso idéntico coincide con su teoría. Las dos víctimas habían puesto sendos anuncios en verso en una revista de contactos. Poco después, otro hombre, que también publicó un anuncio similar en la misma revista, muere del mismo modo que los otros dos. Obviamente sólo hay un camino para llegar hasta el criminal: anunciarse en verso en la misma revista.

El joven y brillante especialista en medicina forense camarada Bukarov, toma posesión de su cargo y pronto comienza a trabajar en el caso del asesinato de un niño. Sin haber tenido tiempo de examinar el cuerpo, a Bukarov le llegan siete cadáveres más. Tras un estudio concienzudo, comunica a sus superiores que en la zona hay un asesino en serie, y pide medios para detenerlo.

Atormentados por la muerte de su esposa, Michael y su hijo Grant entablan una gran amistad con sus nuevos vecinos, los Hunts. The other guy cannot calm down without taking revenge so he takes his friends and they beat up Panos & co. The following night, Panos rapes the guys sister. Afterwards he apologises and they start a relationship. She gets fired from the super market where she works for helping Panos steal. Panos cannot live in misery anymore and steals a yoghurt factory with the help of his friends. The ending is tragic...

An unorganized and spoiled guy, Telis Partalis, who is only cut off for his amusement, is squandering all of his father's possessions in feasts and cartogangers. The film goes on describing their downfall until the apocalyptic ending.
