In this East German film, the third one in The Third is Margit's third lover. After her mother's death, Margit has two affairs which don't work out, and one lesbian friendship which she retains. She is looking for a husband, though, and thinks she has spotted a candidate in her fellow factory worker. As she contemplates marrying him, her story is told in a series of flashbacks.

Otto Scheidel (Manfred Krug) has been captain of the Elbe steamer Jenissei for over twenty years, but his ship, the last of its kind, is going to be converted into a floating restaurant. Otto, whose his strong attachment to the ship has already cost him his relationship with his girlfriend Caramba (Renate Krößner), refuses to take another job and instead joins a railway construction brigade.

Schroeter’s film is a chronicle of Germany from the Nazi era until the economic boom of the 1950s and 1960s, centering on three women who search for a career as singers and dancers.

Described (rather cheekily) by director Michael Snow as a musical comedy, this deft probing of sound/image relationships is one of his wittiest, most entertaining and philosophically stimulating films. In his words, the film “derives its form and the nature of its possible effects from its being built from the inside, as it were, with the actual units of such a film, i.e. the frame and the recorded syllable. Thus its ‘dramatic’ element derives not only from a representation of what may involve us generally in life but from considerations of the nature of recorded speech in relation to moving light-images of people.’”

Toby es un niño incomprendido que tiene a un pato como confidente y que desea ser famoso como Jesucristo. Él, su hermana y un amigo camboyano suelen hacer viajes de exploración en bicicleta. En una de esas excursiones conocen al "Emperador del Perú". un cuentacuentos paralítico y extravagante que vive en un mundo de fantasía.

En un prólogo Dios crea a la niña Eva y ella a Adán. Ambos descubren que el Paraíso es falso y le prenden fuego. Luego emigran al mundo. En un época indeterminada y en apariencia feliz el rico joven Cristián se enamora de Ángela. En la víspera de su boda ella está a punto de morir. Ella posee y despierta débil y con heridas en el cuello. Después de la boda es sacrificado por ella, que es un vampiro. En el epílogo Adán y Eva llaman a asaltar el Edén para acabar con los males del mundo.

El realismo, —casi naturalismo— con arrebatos poéticos del original literario se convierte en estilización y vehículo de las obsesiones místico-revolucionaristas del cineasta y en una continuación de sus búsquedas formales. Deseos es un filme irritante y narcisista que se distingue por su riqueza visual y sus hallazgos en el campo audiovisual. Estuvo prohibida casi seis años, en parte por cuestiones de censura, y en parte por la solemnidad y renuencia del autor de la novela original, quien se sentía traicionado al trastocar el filme el sentido de su obra.

El señor Higgins tiene cuatro hijas y tres yernos. Cada uno de ellos gestiona una de sus empresas. Dan Brooks odia dirigir la compañía de fabricación de papel. Él prefiere dedicar su atención a su caballo de carreras "Broadway Bill". Alice, la hija preferida de Higgins, animará a Dan cuando la esposa de éste se niegue a apoyarlo en las carreras.
