Entre 1990 y 2003, Timothy Treadwell, camarero, actor ocasional y ex-alcohólico, pasó catorce veranos conviviendo con los osos grizzly. Él mismo grabó con su cámara de vídeo sus estancias en Alaska y su obsesiva relación con los plantígrados (unas cien horas). Werner Herzog usó parte de este material.
