El drama se desarrolla en la estación de tren de Roma (la estación Termini). Después de pasar unas vacaciones en Italia, Mary Forbes, una americana casada y con una hija, debe resolver un terrible dilema: coger el tren para regresar a su pais con su familia y reanudar su monótona vida o quedarse con Giovanni, su joven amante, su verdadero amor.

A horror film about a screenwriter who loses the ability to distinguish between his fantasy world and the real world, with disastrous consequences. As he ruminates on his place in any world and loses his grip, he also loses his wife and his children's respect, and critics tear him apart. The final undoing of this screenwriter is a deadline that must be met at all costs, costs that perhaps are too great.

Para ello deberán trasladarse a la casa de Roquemaure, en las afueras y ensayar durante una semana la obra, de la que sólo conocerán el final en el momento de su representación. En la misma casa viven Paul (André Dussollier), mago de profesión, que mantiene con Roquemaure una relación entre la amistad y la rivalidad, y Virgil (Laszlo Szabo), el mayordomo. En el curso de la semana se suceden los ensayos, al tiempo que las actrices van descubriendo los secretos de una casa en la que se oyen extraños sonidos y en la que existe una habitación prohibida. El espectro de una mujer desaparecida, Béatrice (Isabelle Linnartz), flota tanto sobre la obra como en las relaciones de los personajes...
