Una mujer inocente es condenada a la hoguera por brujería. Helen, su hija mayor, intenta conseguir el perdón del Conde Humboldt satisfaciendo la lujuria de este; sin embargo ello no evita que Kurt, el hijo del conde, lleve a cabo el castigo. La furiosa Helen fallece a manos del Conde tras amenazarle con hacer público su pecado. Al poco de la boda llega al castillo una mujer sorprendentemente parecida a la fallecida Helen; como la región está asolada por la peste, Kurt la insta a permanecer en el castillo como su invitada.
