Old school weepy sword fighting epic with Melinda Chen Man Ling, Cathay's answer to Cheng Pei Pei.
A war between two generals, one of whom drafts Jing Wuji, a former fighter who has become a monk, to escort a group of prisoners over the mountains. The monk's efforts are complicated by the reappearance of his two vengeful ex-wives.
In 1771 the oppression of Tsarist administration forced the larger part of Kalmyk's approximately 170,000-200,000 people to migrate to Dzungaria. Ubashi Khan, the great-grandson of Ayuka Khan and the last Kalmyk Khan, decided to return his people to their ancestral homeland Dzungaria, and restore the Dzungaria Khanate and Mongolian independence. Their goal is not an easy one and a lot of fighting and drama unfolds.
On their journey to the west, Tang Seng and Sun Wukong have a falling out and set out a challenge for each other. Sun Wukong agrees to give Tang Seng his magical powers in exchange for Tang Seng's appearance and learning. The challenge they set is to bypass the Seven Spider Sisters and defeat the Hundred-eyed Demon Lord within seven days. After the swap, who will have the determination and wit to win this challenge?

Director Ho Meng-hua is one of Shaw Studio's most versatile directors. He's helmed romances, mysteries, award-winning dramas, contemporary action films, historical costume dramas, fantasies, and, finally, popular swordplay movies. The title character in this one is a chivalrous thief who raises the jealous ire of the rival Red Shirt Gang. There's plenty of action in this adventure, which sweeps from the plains to the mountains ... to the sound of slashing swords.
