Humperdinck: Hänsel und Gretel (2008)

Hocus pocus! Hansel and Gretel in a fairy production by Johannes Felsenstein

Género : Música

Tiempo de ejecución : 1H 38M

Director : Brooks Riley, Johannes Felsenstein

Sinopsis

Johannes Felsenstein’s production of HANSEL AND GRETEL presents it with every sinister element removed. The children remain in a home setting with their own bed central to the scene and the barest hint of a forest behind, while their father plays the witch as an amiable, totally benevolent figure, not sinister at all, even joining them in the final joyful ensemble. When they sing that the witch is dead, you find that the production contradicts that completely. Taking that unsinister stance means that the opera loses much of its bite. No doubt Felsenstein felt that it would make the piece more accessible for very young children, though many of them relish the sinister element. That said, it is a strong and capable performance, very well conducted and with a cast of good if not outstanding singers. One wonders what Felsenstein meant to convey, just as it is not clear why the central characters should regularly be carrying dolls. A highly individual version of a much-loved opera.

As it unfolds, it explores issues of fame and wealth, the position of a strong and independently minded woman in a very masculine society and, perhaps most importantly, the incomprehensible attraction between abuser and victim. Bizet's opera, based on Prosper Merimée's novel, premiered in Paris on March 3, 1875. Set in a poor area of Seville, the story of the magnetic woman who seduces, loves, and ultimately destroys her lover and herself...

Adriana Lecouvreur
Mark Elder leads the orchestra and chorus in a lavish performance . . . She certainly has the temperament to play Adriana, who can present herself as humble and sweet but, in a scene where she takes the stage, is nothing if not intense . . . this recording provides a reminder of how secure and uniquely attractive her singing can be. Her soprano glides effortlessly, its top still silvery, over the oft-excerpted arias "Io son l'umile ancella" and "Poveri fiori." There's a real core even in much of her soft singing, and the recording flatters her lower register. As Maurizio, Jonas Kaufmann has the ideal chiaroscuro sound to portray both poet and warrior. It's great to hear his robust tenor at full force . . . Olga Borodina makes for an imperious princess . . . Alessandro Corbelli employs luster and dignity.
