Sinopsis
Marie is a social worker in an immigrant dense suburb. Outside her daily work she runs a youth center, leads courses and functions as parole officer for young Belem, who has served time in a correctional center. She also takes care of Belem's son, Ray, when Ray's mother is at work. Belem's release from prison coincides with the appearance of an irritatingly nosy economist from the social services head quarters, curious about Marie's impressing but costly work. As pressure mounts, Marie's true feelings rise to the surface and her methods and motives are questioned.

Sam Dawson (Sean Penn) es un deficiente mental que deberá luchar por conservar la custodia de su pequeña hija, ya que el Estado considera que no está capacitado para hacerse cargo de su educación. Por primera vez en su vida, víctima de problemas cardiacos, Daniel Blake, carpintero inglés de 59 años, se ve obligado a acudir a las ayudas sociales. Sin embargo, a pesar de que el médico le ha prohibido trabajar, la administración le obliga a buscar un empleo si no desea recibir una sanción. En el transcurso de sus citas al “job center”, Daniel se cruza con Rachel, una madre soltera de dos niños que tuvo que aceptar un alojamiento a 450 km de su ciudad para evitar que la envíen a un hogar de acogida. Prisioneros de la maraña de aberraciones administrativas actuales de Gran Bretaña, Daniel y Rachel intentarán ayudarse mutuamente.

Cuando Maggie conoce a Jorge, un refugiado hispanoamericano, vislumbra la posibilidad de rehacer por fin su hogar. Sin embargo, su pasado sigue atormentándola. Una vez involucrada en la burocracia de la asistencia social, le resultará muy difícil conseguir la custodia de sus hijos, pero Maggie no se da por vencida.
