Sobibor es un pequeño pero activo campo de concentración, donde la única esperanza de salvación es la huida. Un joven de 22 años, Thomas, decide que es el momento de dejar su adicción a las drogas. Para ello, decide apartarse a una comunidad aislada en una montaña, en los Alpes. Dirigida por ex drogadictos, todos los que llegan allí siguen un método divino para curarse de su dependencia: La oración. Un lugar dónde descubrirá la sencillez, el amor, la amistad, la paz...

Tom Connors, un preso a quien se concede un permiso para visitar a su novia herida, se ve involucrado en una pelea con un mafioso, a quien su novia mata de un disparo. Connors huye del lugar del crimen por una ventana y, cuando regresa a prisión, es culpado del asesinato y condenado a la silla electrica.

El guion de Jaromil Jires y Milan Kundera está basado en la novela de este último, la primera de sus novelas de éxito mundial. Este guion, en donde no dudaron en cortar o cambiar algunas escenas, es considerado como la mejor adaptación de una obra de Kundera. La película se comenzó a rodar en 1967, incluso antes de la aparición del libro, y se terminó de rodar después de la llegada de los tanques soviéticos en 1968.
