Un chico del Norte de la isla de Hokkaido caza una mariposa de Nagasaki que solo aparece en el Sur del archipielago. Sus profesores creen que ha comprado el insecto en una tienda y le acusan de haber engañado. Mientras, una larva de la misma mariposa comienza un a veces cómico y siempre improbable viaje desde el Sur hasta el Norte. En su viaje, la larva aparece yuxtapuesta en una serie de historias de amor fallidas, traumáticas memorias de la guerra, operaciones de contrabando y corruptas tramas políticas.
