The Islands (2022)

Agridulce comedia sobre la vida de Chu, un viejo chef de Taipei, viudo y con tres hijas (Jen, Chien y Ning) muy distintas pero con algo en común: la rebeldía. Un buen día, sus vidas empiezan a complicarse: una gruñona viuda se muda al apartamento de al lado, alguien se queda embarazada, alguien cae en una profunda depresión, alguien muere y alguien encuentra el amor verdadero. El reputado director Ang Lee volvió a Taiwán para contar otra historia de sentimientos y emociones.

Taiwan, años '60. Los jóvenes taiwaneses, aunque dominados por China, se sienten deslumbrados por los Estados Unidos y organizan bandas para afirmar su identidad. La versión original duraba 237 minutos, pero por motivos comerciales Yang la recortó para su exhibición hasta los 188 minutos.

Vicky es una joven con el corazón dividido entre dos hombres, Hao-hao y Jack. Por las noches, trabaja como relaciones públicas en una discoteca para ayudar a ambos. Hao-hao la vigila constantemente: controla las cuentas, las facturas de teléfono, los mensajes de su móvil e incluso su olor, para descubrir lo que ha hecho en su ausencia. Ella ya no le puede soportar y huye, pero Hao-hao la encuentra y le pide que vuelva. Entre tanto, Jack invierte en diferentes negocios; su manía de recibir con los brazos abiertos a todos los que necesitan ayuda, le causa algún problema que otro. Vicky ya se ha refugiado dos veces en su casa. Se establece entre ellos una relación más íntima, que podría conducir a una relación más estrecha o a una sólida amistad.

Film sobre la infancia y la adolescencia, muy influida por la propia niñez del director. Como muchos de sus compatriotas, la familia de Hou se trasladó del continente a Taiwán en 1948 y fue incapaz de volver. Captain Lu is the respected head of security of a village, but his wealthy boss runs the town, and is corrupt, while the boss's son is a dissolute skirt-chaser. The town boss is minting counterfeit coins, and someone is trying to gather the evidence of this. Events bring Lu and Pai onto the same side, which is fortunate, because the town boss brings in Mr Lung, a fearsome martial arts genius, to kill off all his enemies.

A commercial airliner on a routine flight between Taipei and Seoul is hijacked and taken to mainland China by the Taiwan Revolutionary Army Front. Chinese authorities cannot seize the plane because of the presence of an important business figure on board, but agree to cooperate with Taiwanese authorities to defuse the tense situation.
