Sinopsis
En la región suiza del Jura los inviernos pueden llegar a ser terriblemente fríos, y para Jean y Laure, que acaban de perder a su pequeña Marie en el incendio de un pajar, éste en concreto está resultando interminable. Laure oscila entre la negación de todo y las crisis de llanto; Jean, por su parte, pasa del sentimiento de culpa al deseo de olvidar. La granja, que atraviesa un mal momento, requiere toda su atención. El vínculo enfermizo que mantenía unida a la joven pareja acaba rompiéndose: Laure ingresa en un hospital y Jean, incapaz de llevar la granja, acepta un trabajo en una fundición. Allí conoce a Labinota, una refugiada kosovar cuyo marido murió en un ataque de los serbios. Es una mujer fuerte y valiente, que sabe compartir y divertirse. Gracias a ella, Jean, que ha comprendido que no puede vivir con sus penas y sus miedos, se reconcilia poco a poco con la vida. Y Laure va mejorando. Ahora que ha asumido su dolor, quisiera volver con Jean.
In this film, director Rene Feret tells the story of his parents' lives. In 1935 his mother Aline works in her parents' cafe in a mining town in northern France. There, she meets a customer, Pierre and decides she is going to marry him. In a reversal of roles, she is the one who proposes to him, and she also engineers a false pregnancy to persuade her parents to okay the match. With a few stops along the way, the story picks up after the war with the birth of the couple's third son, who is given the name Rene in memory of their first, dead son. Never rich, they achieve some level of financial stability just as their sons are about to head off to the city for college. The love between the two older people is highlighted in a poignant scene as, just as he is about to die, the father shares a champagne toast with his wife in memory of one of their happier moments.
