En 1941, el sacerdote polaco Maximilian Kolbe fue arrestado por los nazis. Sería recluido en el campo de concentración de Auschwitz. Con motivo de la fuga de un prisionero, los nazis escogieron a varios hombres al azar, para ser ejecutados y desalentar nuevas escapadas. Cuando uno de los prisioneros elegidos, padre de familia, suplicó por su vida pensando en los suyos, Kolbe se ofreció voluntario para sustituir a ese hombre. Juan Pablo II canonizó a Kolbe en 1982, proponiéndolo como mártir de la caridad.

A young, idealistic poet, turns his back on civilization and goes to small, backwood village, rents a bed in the house of an old woman, and decides to make his living as a lumberjack. Soon he realizes that the world around him is far from perfect.

Set in military barracks in a small town during World War I. The soldiers herded in the barracks are 'politically suspect' mix of characters from all over of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: Czechs, Jews, and even Italians, but officers in charge are Germans. A new lieutenant arrives with the mission to bring order to the unit. He is the sadist, enjoying humiliating the men. Fed up with his behaviour the lower ranks kidnap him one night and string him up in a public toilet. They also make sure that he fouls up during the inspection. Eventually the five ring leaders are imprisoned. They escape and end up in Budapest posing as guards as guards of veterinary surgeons. They are caught and sent back to face a court martial and their old tormentor.

As the Germans invade Poland Jewish Ruth and her mother are trapped by the oncoming Nazis. When they are loaded onto a truck for transportation to a ghetto, Ruth is told by her mother to jump from the truck at the first chance and to make her way to relatives in Warsaw. While the war progresses Ruth tries to survive and grow up.
