Salvador Medina (Cantinflas) es un médico que se desenvuelve en las afueras de la capital, es decir, es un médico rural. Se encuentra con muchos y diversos avances tecnológicos en el campo de la medicina, de manera que él precisa adaptarse a las nuevas tecnologías. Tiene frecuentes conflictos con su adversario, el doctor Villanueva (Miguel Ángel Álvarez "El Men"), su superior. En realidad, el doctor Villanueva lo que desea es la superación científica de Cantinflas, y, a la larga, de hecho se convierten en cuñados. En su actividad médica en el hospital, el doctor Salvador Medina, de acuerdo con sus principios humanitarios sirve a diversos pacientes levantando su autoestima.
