El joven de 17 años Jimmy Walker (Jack Nicholson, en su debut cinematográfico) es brutamente golpeado por Manny Cole (Brett Halsey) y dos de sus jóvenes amigos debido a que Manny ha intentado propasarse con la novia de Jimmy, Carole Fields (Carolyn Mitchell).
