Director de cine italiano, nacido en El Cairo, Egipto. La actividad empresarial que desarrolló su padre en la capital egipcia le permitió ir a estudiar a Londres. En 1928 se marchó a Italia, donde comenzó a trabajar en el mundo del cine fundando la productora Augustus con Alessandro Blasetti, del que será su ayudante en la primera película. Al año siguiente, en El Cairo, dirigió su primer film, La diga di Maghmod, un documental, tras el cual marchó a Hollywood para trabajar en las versiones italianas que realizaba la Metro Goldwyn Mayer de sus películas sonoras. Tras un año de estancia, regresó a Europa y, fundamentalmente en Italia, realizó toda su obra, en la que destaca, especialmente, los trabajos que llevó a cabo durante los años en que Benito Mussolini estuvo en el poder, películas de propaganda, Caballería (1936), De una misma sangre (1938), por las que le concedieron una serie de premios y distinciones. No obstante, esta etapa pesó en el resto de su carrera, intermitente, hasta que a primeros de los años cincuenta dirigió sus últimas películas, para dedicarse, esporádicamente, a la interpretación. Estuvo casado con la actriz Anna Magnani entre 1936 y 1940.

The film takes place at the end of the 19th century. The Cardinal Guglielmo Massaia has spent 20 years in Ethiopia to convert people to the Catholic Church. He comes back to Italy and he tries to get the help of the government of Piedmont. The Count Cavour, although he appreciates the Cardinal's deeds in Africa, cannot grant his Cabinet's support to the Cardinal's plans. The missionary man, trusting the Divine Providence, goes back to Africa by himself. The Cardinal, who is known among the people as Abuna Messias, becomes a friend of king Menelik. The support of the king is fundamental to spread his word and accomplish his mission. The Head of the Coptic Church, Abuna Attanasio, does whatever he can to prevent Massaia from reaching his goals and to get him exiled from Ethiopia. Menelik refuses to help Abuna Attanasio, who decides to address the Emperor, thus igniting a war between the Emperor and his subject Menelik. In order to end the war, the Cardinal decides to leave Africa.
