The man with the flute music play. And music song became. The voice of the song begging to seek the other bones of his scattered body. The man and his mother were in those ways of God and hell, looking for the bones that make up the skeleton of that Christian. And give him a Christian burial. Tras casi 20 años de exilio, con el regreso de la democracia a Chile, Miguel Littin volvió oficialmente a su país. Previamente había entrado clandestinamente en 1985 para filmar una crónica de la dictadura, osadía que inspiró el libro de Gabriel García Márquez "Aventura de Miguel Littin clandestino en Chile". En "Los Náufragos" reflejó el efecto que había tenido la dictadura de Pinochet en la sociedad chilena a través del personaje de Aron. Según la crítica inglesa, "Los náufragos" es una extraordinariamente oscura y poética película.

El documental relata las dos caras de una nación pobre y subdesarrollada, la contradicción en las formas en que vive el pueblo y la burguesía y la violencia implícita en esa desigualdad. La música ocupa un papel importante en la narrativa. Las imágenes de la clase trabajadora están ambientadas con guitarras melancólicas y canciones en español, con letras que aluden a un pueblo que debe levantarse y acceder a una vida digna, mientras que las escenas de la burguesía, son acompañadas con música en otro idioma que alude al extranjerismo de esa forma de vida, o canciones pop alienantes.

La película trata de Eloy, bandolero chileno y compañero de Joaquín Murieta, quien es buscado por la justicia en la frontera con Argentina. A pesar de que un escape parece imposible, en su desesperación huye sin un destino fijo.
