El inspector Nick Cafmeyer parece tenerlo todo: buena presencia, coco, perspectiva en su carrera… sin embargo, una oscura sobra se cierne sobre su vida y relaciones. Desde los 9 años, Nick ha sido perseguido por la desaparición sin resolver de su hermano menor Bjorn. Basándose en el testimonio de Nick, su vecino Plettinckx, un conocido delincuente sexual, fue interrogado y puesto en libertad. Tras estos años, Plettinckx todavía vive cerca de Nick y uno de sus placeres es acosarle. La única mujer capaz de sostener una relación intermitente con Nick, es su jefe Danni, que es mayor que él. Ella se resiste a incluir a Nick en un caso muy preocupante: una pareja ha estado tres días en cautiverio bajo el yugo de un intruso. El intruso ha desaparecido sin dejar rastro junto a su hijo de 9 años, Robin. Nick dirigirá la búsqueda y la convertirá en una persecución implacable.

De camino a casa Luc y su mujer son testigos de un intento de robo. Luc interviene y el ladrón lo deja inconsciente. Tres semanas después, se despierta y recibe la trágica noticia de la muerte de su mujer durante el incidente. Luc consigue identificar al culpable, que es detenido y juzgado, pero debido a un error procesal es puesto en libertad por el jurado. A partir de ese momento su única obsesión será la venganza.
