Historia

Director de cine y escritor brasileño nacido en Ituiutaba, Minas Gerais. Comenzó su carrera de cineasta como miembro del Grupo Kuatro de Cinema, cuando aún estudiaba en la Escuela Politécnica de la Universidad de Sao Paulo, junto con el cineasta Francisco Ramalho Jr. y el director de arte Clovis Bueno. Su primera película fue el documental Libertad de imprenta (1966), producido por el movimiento universitario. Desde entonces, en uno de los momentos más difíciles de la historia de Brasil, marcado por la fuerte represión del gobierno militar, inició una prolífica carrera como director de películas documentales y de ficción, inicialmente alegóricas y luego más explícitas en el tratamiento de la realidad política y social de Brasil; estos films fueron premiados en festivales brasileños e internacionales. Como escritor, su primer libro es una compilación de textos ficcionales escritos durante el Golpe del 64, Perdido no meio da rua (1989). Luego, A terra do Deus dará (1991), la novela Um olé em Deus (1997), O portal dos sonhos (2001) y O povo fala (2002).
