Alice y Céline son dos amigas que tienen una relación especial. Viven con sus familias en los suburbios bruselenses de los 60, en dos idénticas casas adosadas de clase media. Han transmitido su vínculo a sus hijos de ocho años, Théo y Maxime, que han crecido juntos y son como hermanos. Sus maridos también comparten una complicidad similar, y las dos familias prácticamente viven como si fueran una sola. Pero un día, llega la tragedia cuando Maxime muere en un accidente que Alice presencia pero no puede evitar.
