This documentary is a three-part tribute to director Guru Dutt, who died in 1964 at the age of 39. The work traces Guru Dutt's personal story through many interviews with his family members and colleagues and observes his work through the use of extensive film excerpts. The documentary was produced by the British television network Channel 4 producer Nasreen Munni Kabir.

Shakti and Shaitan Singh are two brothers who belong to a gang of bandits, headed by the their dad, Bahadur Singh. One day while on a looting rampage in Jamalpur Village, Shakti is wounded and takes shelter with Harkishen and his daughter, Lali. He loses consciousness for several days, while the rest of the bandits think he is dead. When Shakti regains his senses he and Lali fall in love with each other, but Lali wants him to lead a honest life, and it is only then that he can marry her.

When her cheating husband dies in an accident, childless widow Gayetri tricks her husband's pregnant lover into giving up her baby, then raises the child, Sunny, as her own son.

Anjali lives in a hostel and always waits for her mother Kamini to come take her during holidays but Kamini never takes Anjali home; instead she takes her on holidays to different places. Kamini pretends to be a wealthy woman in front of Anjali, but she actually works for the Bombay-based Don Sultanbhai--she conducts robberies for him. Anjali falls in love with Anand and both want to get their parents together, but at the last moment Kamini is called back to Bombay by Sultanbhai; this doesn't go over well with Anand's mother. Sultanbhai finds out from Kamini about Anjali and how life was cruel to her he promises Kamini that he will get Anjali married to Anand and makes a fake family out of his gang and present them in front of Anand's family.

After the passing away of her parents, Mangala moves in with her maternal uncle, his wife, and five cousins, who all live a poor lifestyle in a small town. She has a sweetheart in Anoop and hopes to marry him someday. When Anoop hesitates, her marriage is arranged elsewhere, however, on the day of the marriage, the groom meets with an accident and passes away. Her aunt quickly gets her married to a singer named Anand. After the marriage, Mangala is shocked to find that Anand is blind and detests him.

Young Chetan Prakash and beautiful Payal are in love and would like to marry each other. Their respective fathers, Daulatram and Retired Col. Bhagwant Singh, have other plans and want them to marry the spouses of their choice. So Chetan and Payal decide to elope, and marry on the run. Bhagwant Singh advertises in the newspapers for his missing daughter, and offers a handsome reward for her return. Chetan finds a job as a chauffeur, and Payal works as a maid in a house, and they become absorbed in their daily chores, not realizing that their employer, Geeta, is under the power and influence of a gangster named Shivlal, who operates a religious sect under the name of Mahayogi, and who has a gas chamber that he uses to kill people who disagree with him.

Two close friends decide to enter law enforcement, one as a police officer, the other as a lawyer, but their friendship begins to unravel when they both fall in love with the same woman.

Thakur Rajnath Singh Chouhan opens a can of worms when he announces that he is going to marry a prostitute by the name of Tulsi. His mother will not even consider Tulsi as a daughter-in-law, and would prefer that he marry Sanjukta. Tulsi convinces him that he should marry the woman of his mother's choice, which he eventually does. Thereafter Tulsi gives birth to a baby boy, Ajay, and passes away. Sanjukta raises Ajay as her own child, even after the passing away of Rajnath, and even after giving birth to Pratap. Ajay is given the entire responsibility of the estate, while Pratap squanders money on courtesans and alcohol. Sanjukta trusts Ajay, until one day when a villager complains to her that Ajay has got his daughter, Geeta, pregnant; additionally she also finds out that Ajay has been misappropriating money, and also owes money to a prostitute named Leelabai, the very woman who sold Tulsi to Rajnath.

A kingpin smuggler kills a police officer and succeeds in separating his teen-aged sons. The elder son who had vowed to take revenge, accidentally meets his younger brother. The two join forces to bust the smugglers gang.

But he chooses to become a revolutionary freedom fighter and abandons Kamini due to the fear that he might die during his struggle leaving her as a widow. The vicissitude of time, however, gets Kamini married to Dheeraj Kumar, a police inspector, and also a friend of Rajesh. Rajesh takes refuge at Dheeraj's government quarters and encounters his past as he meets Kamini again. Eventually, Dheeraj finds out about their past relationship. He is encountered with the challenge of believing the chastity of his marriage or the doubt in his mind whether his trust has been broken while he was away from home on duty.

The Government of India has devised plans for a new kind of super aircraft. A gangster, Diwan, manages to procure this plan from corrupt military officials, and hides it in his safe along with other valuables. Asha's dad wants her to get married to Ashwini, and he soon announces their engagement. Ashwini finds out that Asha is in love with Vikas, and arranges an accident for Vikas.

A lawyer's wife dies in his arms. Yet, another woman - identical in appearance and accused of aiding a gang of bandits - claims to be the lawyer's wife. A courtroom drama ensues.

One stormy night, a doctor offers a ride to a ghostly woman he meets on the side of the road. Later, he discovers his intended bride is identical in appearance to the ghost. Who was she and why does she haunt him?

An army officer loses his memory, falls for a married woman, then regains part of his memory but forgets her.

Story of two friends, end up as a law breaker and another as law enforcer Babu and Malik are two inseparable friends who live in a small town in India. One day they decide to play a prank and steal something. They get caught, while Malik's dad come to bail out and stand surety for him, Babu has no one to do so and ends up in the juvenile center. When the two grow up, Malik becomes a Police Inspector, while Babu takes to crime and ends up being sentenced in jail. When he gets discharged, he goes to meet with his partner-in-crime, Bali, and together they start planning the next heist

Based on A.J.Cronin's 'Beyond This Place', this movie narrates the story of an untiring crusade for justice. A newspaper editor, Shrivastav, is killed when he was about to expose the underworld links of a very rich and influential person. C.I.D. Inspector Shekhar is assigned to this case, an investigation of which leads him to suspect Dharamdas and his men. But Dharamdas spins a web of lies and deceit, and Shekhar himself becomes a suspect, and is arrested by the police, and loses his job, leaving Dharamdas and his men to carry on undeterred.

Film starring Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and K.N. Singh Rajendra Sayal (Dev Anand) becomes a millionaire from a poverty-stricken situation with the help of his friend Kalu (Johnny Walker). Jealous of his sudden elevation in status, a lawyer named Karamchand (K. N. Singh) plots to rob Sayal of all his property. For this reason, he hires Asha (Geeta Bali) to seduce Sayal and make him fall in love with her, but she ends up falling for him.

Kalu is a taxi-driver in Bombay, India. He has two women who love him and would like to marry him. Kalu first wants to establish himself, and become rich, before he can even think of marriage. One of the women who loves him, has a father who is involved in gangster-type activities, and would like Kalu also to join him so that he can get rich soon. Kalu has now to decide to become rich quick or sleep better.

Carlos and his sister Maria live along the Indian coast in a fishing village. Tony and Lisa are 2 newcomers and soon Maria and Tony fall in love. This does not go down well with Simon who loves Maria.

Madan comes from a poor family background. Unable to find employment, he takes to gambling in order to pay for his sister's medical expenses. Soon, he forms a bond with Leena, a dancer, and is falsely accused of her murder.
