In a typically mixed Baghdadi neighbourhood in 2006, a community of ordinary people try to live their everyday lives amidst the threat of unpredictable violence. At the heart of these intersecting stories we find Sara, a single mother and novelist, who regains her will to write after witnessing the forced exile of her Christian neighbour and best friend Sabiha. With the news of Saddam Hussein's sudden execution shortly before the New Year, Sara and her neighbours brace themselves for an uncertain future. Yet, like a miracle, each is able to sustain a fragile sense of hope.

Esta es la verdadera historia de Freddy y Walter, dos jóvenes judíos eslovacos, que fueron deportados a Auschwitz en 1942. El 10 de abril de 1944, después de una planificación meticulosa y con la ayuda y la resistencia de sus internos, logran escapar. A magical film about the mysteries of childhood and a thousand-year-old custom. Tom, Sebastian and Paul are three children from very different families. They live in a small village in 'Mansfelder Land', an area where the demise of mining has left its scars. Despite the changing times, the villagers have retained an archaic custom over the centuries. Just once a year, the younger ones are able to triumph over their elders, and this is the first hint at the changing of generations: springtime drives out the winter, and thus the young drive out the old. That's the way it's always been, and how it will always be - and once a year, this old magic returns to the hearts of the villagers.

La reciente guerra, tan cruel e implacable ha desencadenado en la ciudad una especie de desierto moral y existencial. En ese contexto, la situación de la familia Mladen es muy dramática: a su hijo Nemanja le diagnostican una grave afección cardíaca, y los médicos insisten en que sea operado en el extranjero. Conseguir el dinero necesario es casi imposible. Sin embargo, cuando la familia está ya al borde de la desesperación, el padre conoce a un hombre dispuesto a proporcionarle esa cantidad a cambio de que mate a su rival en los negocios.
