En 1941, el sacerdote polaco Maximilian Kolbe fue arrestado por los nazis. Sería recluido en el campo de concentración de Auschwitz. Con motivo de la fuga de un prisionero, los nazis escogieron a varios hombres al azar, para ser ejecutados y desalentar nuevas escapadas. Cuando uno de los prisioneros elegidos, padre de familia, suplicó por su vida pensando en los suyos, Kolbe se ofreció voluntario para sustituir a ese hombre. Juan Pablo II canonizó a Kolbe en 1982, proponiéndolo como mártir de la caridad.
La película cuenta la historia biográfica de Karol Wojtyla, comenzando en 1926 en Polonia: muestra la invasión nazi a ese país, y la vida de Wojtyla como sacerdote, obispo y cardenal, hasta que finalmente es nombrado papa con el nombre de Juan Pablo II.
The film is a story of a young man coerced into undercover work for the police, in return for their dropping of charges against him. He is to befriend a leader of a gang of juvenile delinquents who plans big robbery of a jewelry store. The scheme works and the gang is caught in the act except the gang leader.

Westerplatte is a small peninsula at the entry to the Gdansk Harbour. Before World War II, it functioned as a Polish ammunition depot in the Free City of Danzig/Gdansk. Its crew consisted of one infantry company and a group of civilians, 182 people in total. It was the only Polish guard-post at the mouth of the Vistula River, with as little as five sentries, one field cannon, two anti-armour guns and four mortars. It was the first obstacle to Hitler's predatory march across Europe. The first shots of World War II were fired here. This film tells the story of Westerplatte's courageous defenders.
