Europa Occidental, principios del siglo XVI. Una banda de mercenarios que se dedica al pillaje y está encabezada por el soldado Martin, pretende robar a Arnolfini, su anterior señor feudal. Para ello Martin forma un ejército con el dinero conseguido del robo de reliquias. Después de secuestrar a la hijastra de Arnolfini, la princesa Agnes, la salva de ser violada y ésta le promete amor eterno.
