Desde hace dos años Helena vive sola. Cada día contempla una lejana isla, donde Pierre, su marido, preso político, permanece junto a cientos de hombres, condenado a trabajos forzados. Decenas de presos mueren de tuberculosis, quizá Pierre sea el siguiente. Helena sólo piensa en volver a ver a su marido. Todas las semanas solicita a las autoridades una visita, que por una otra razón, nunca llega. Un día, el cartero aparece con un permiso. Helena tiene una hora para estar con Pierre, aunque sabe que será laúltima vez que lo vea.
