La película está inspirada en la vida de Luang Pradit Parió, considerado como el último gran maestro compositor de música tradicional tailandesa. El protagonista es Sorn, un muchacho que toca magníficamente el ranard-ek, un xilofón de madera tailandés. "La obertura" refleja la historia de su vida, desde sus orígenes humildes en el Siam rural del siglo XIX, hasta convertirse en músico de la corte en el palacio del rey Rama IV, siempre con una lucha apasionada por preservar la herencia musical de su país.
