Marianne is unhappily married with the rich Arvid Croneman. Arvid has been ill for some time and Marianne has been looking forward to his passing away. However, Arvid recovers. Marianne has had an affair with Lennart Hägg, her husband's doctor. She steals poison from his office and makes sure that her husband gets a poisonous injection that swiftly kills him. After his burial, Arvid's relatives, who lives in the house, treats her with suspicion. Has she really gotten rid of all the evidence?

She lives with her grandmother and her younger brother Benke. One day she discovers that Benke belongs to a boy, who makes minor burglaries in newspaper kiosks.

In an occupied country, the people rise to throw off the occupants. This includes Jens the farmer and his three sons who successfully perform sneak attacks on the invading army.

The architect Georg Wall is sitting in his spacious Stockholm apartment. He has been waiting several hours since lunch for his significantly younger wife, Lola Wall, to appear. When she eventually comes home, she wants a divorce.

The innkeeper Schultze and his wife are broke and don't know how to pay their rent when a shipwrecked sailor shows up with a chest full of money. In despair the Schultze couple murders the sailor.
